Демократія та демократизація в контексті різних культур
Анотація: The course aims to provide basic understanding of the concept "democracy" and the problems of its practical application in various cultural settings. Focusing on cultural factors, it explores the concepts of "social capital" and "spiritual capital" and their roles in selected cases of successes and failures to establish and consolidate democracy. This course contrasts the ideal of democracy and its actual practice. Giving credit to the fact that democracy constitutes one of the most important sets of ideas in the contemporary globalized world, prospects for global system democratization, in particular cultural challenges, will be discussed.
Upon successful completion of the course students should know:
selected approaches to defining and measuring democracy,
key concepts used in the contemporary social science analysis of cultural aspects of democracy (such as civic culture, civil society, social capital, spiritual capital, mediating structures, amoral familism, free spaces),
selected studies of cultural aspects of democracy and democratization,
the methodology and results of most known international ratings of democracy.
Upon successful completion of the course students should be able:
to contrast various approaches to defining and measuring democracies,
to appreciate the complexity of the term democracy both as an ideal and as a reflection of actual practices,
to understand the gap between the ideal and reality of democracy,
to understand how the chosen definition of democracy may influence research structure and conclusions,
to discuss the application of key concepts used in the analysis of cultural aspects of democracy to the current situation in Ukraine,
to discuss contemporary challenges to democratization and to sustaining democracy,
to understand the multidisciplinary character of democracy and democratization studies.
