Анотація: The course "The American 20th Century Novel" is concentrated on important 20th century American novels. The reading list consists of novels that for various reasons have had an impact on and have defined the further development of prose and literature in general in the US and beyond. The American novel is discussed in a number of contexts: historical. societal, and cultural, as an important factor in the definition of American life.

ПРН-2. Ефективно працювати з інформацією: добирати необхідну інформацію з різних джерел, зокрема з фахової літератури та електронних баз, критично аналізувати й інтерпретувати її, впорядковувати, класифікувати й систематизувати матеріали до курсу "Американська велика проза ХХ ст."
ПРН-4. Розуміти фундаментальні принципи буття людини,
природи, суспільства.
ПРН-8. Знати й розуміти систему мови, загальні властивості літератури як мистецтва слова, історію мов (англійська) і вміти застосовувати ці знання у професійній діяльності.
ПРН-13. Аналізувати й інтерпретувати твори американської великої прози ХХ ст.
ПРН-22. Дотримуватися принципів академічної доброчесності.

Зміст дисципліни: Introduction to the contexts of 20th century American literature. American history, culture, and society as a background: events, trends, phenomena, diversity. Literary processes at the beginning of the 20th century: modernism. Questions pertaining to the reception of texts. F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gadsby. WWI and the post-war generation. Fitzgerald's novel as the matrix for the "Jazz Age" in American culture. The city as a topos in modernist literature. Changing behavior mores in American society. Questions of gender. Sport as a theme. The past as a theme. Journalistic writing. The omniscient "Unreliable" narrator. The phenomenon of the "American Dream": interpretations and meaning. Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast. Autobiography. Questions pertaining to fiction and non-fiction in literary writing. Historical memory as a factor in recreating the past. Expatriate literature. The myth of post-WWI Paris in literature. Gertrude Stein and the "Lost Generation". Hemingway's "iceberg" theory of authorship. First person narration. Hemingway and self-censorship. William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury. Stream of consciousness writing. Christian symbolism in literature. Faulkner as a representative of southern "Gothic"writing. Interpretations of southern US history in American literature. Race, gender, and mental state as themes. Sexuality as a theme. Combining forms of narration in a text. Henry Miller's The Tropic of Cancer. Censorship in the literary process. Reinterpretations of the modernist novel: language, sexuality, gender. A reinterpretation of Paris as a topos. "Autobiographical" narration. A redefinition of the question of perceived morality in the writing and reading of texts. Jack Kerouac's On the Road. Post WWII American culture and society. The Beats: overview and analysis. The road as a theme in world literature. The American "road" text". The automobile in American culture. Kerouac's theory of "spontaneous writing". The "anti-hero" in American literature. American youth culture: mores, sexuality, alcohol, substances. Ken Keysey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The postmodern in American literature. Redefinitions of mental state and madness. Psychological health: society, family, gender, sexuality. Abuses of psychiatry. Mental health institutions. Challenges to the American "system". Redefinitions of the depiction of American Natives in culture and literature. Subliminal narration. Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. The New Journalism and fiction writing: non-fiction as a new category in the fictional novel. Redefinition of the true crime novel genre. Crime and criminal justice. Small town America. Questions pertaining to the death penalty. "Cinematographic" narration in a literary text. Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar. Female writing. The roman ? clef. Growing up female. Female mental health and madness. American psychiatry and women. mental institutions and their practices. New York as a topos. Relationships, sexuality, and motherhood from a female perspective. Female friendship. Cormac McCarthy's The Road. The post-apocalyptic novel. Ecological disaster. Nature and technology. American survivalism. Further development of the road novel. Violence in American society. Male friendship and fatherhood. Summary of issues discussed in the course: American history, society, culture, and literature. The 20th century reader of the modern American novel.
