Requirements and Regulations for the Qualification

The qualification received by Master students of “Biology” Program is necessary and minimum sufficient for professional functioning in the field of research and live nature protection, use of biological systems in the economy and medicine. Master in Biology is prepared for independent work, which requires high education level in the field of biology; Master must possess scientific research skills based on fundamental science basis and general knowledge, advanced methods of scientific research modern experimental biology methods as well as information technologies necessary to carry on scientific research in the field of biology studies. Master in Biology is independent to plan and implement practical field and laboratory tests in different biology subjects, analyze and summarize the obtained results, work out and test new methods, write scientific reports and other papers which are part of scientific research, participate in scientific conferences, have articles published on scientific issues. Master in Biology is able to work out policy documents in the professional field, study the existing policy papers and follow their points. Master in Biology is independent to perform manufacturing work in the field of nature protection, bio-technologies, and certain aspects in medicine. Master in Biology is prepared for professional functioning at college-level and university-level institutions.

Program Profile

Master in Biology receives knowledge necessary to perform professional work in biological sphere including scientific research, practical science, administration and teaching. Biology program is mainly focused on scientific work in scientific research institutions of Ukraine and other countries worldwide. Master paper is written based on the results of a student’s own testing research, which is implemented within the experiment premises of NaUKMA and scientific research institutes of Ukrainian National Academy of Science. The curriculum covers the total amount of 120-135 ECTS credits, which allows enforcing the program with modern optional courses given by leading experts in corresponding branches of biology.

Key Learning Outcomes

Results of successful studying of Biology Master’s Program are reflected in Master students’ creativity, their ability to organized thinking, capability of constant advancing of their studying and research levels as well as searching for innovation activity. Master in Biology realizes evolution ways of civilization and uses the gained knowledge to encourage active participation in its protection, they are able to evaluate in a proper way the risks of a situation and make right decisions on questions concerning geo-political and bio-sphere aspects. Master graduates use the received knowledge to understand modern problems in biology and their solution by means of their professional activity; they are aware and able to use main theories and principles in all branches of biology, capable of organized thinking and independent processing of information, fundamental vision of problems, outlining and solving problems. Master in Biology is prepared to perform field and laboratory experimental work, able to use modern equipment including computer soft and hardware; they realize their responsibility for the quality of scientific work performed and reliability of obtained results. Aimed to ensure high quality of their functioning, a Master in Biology:

• is aware of the history of and methods applied in biology;
• possesses basic knowledge of biosphere study and understands modern processes in biosphere and is able to professionally estimate the consequences of social important projects connected to biology;
• uses modern information technologies in all aspects of professional activity;
• realizes and is able to prove the significance of natural sciences in scientific world;
• is fluent in English and able to work in international surrounding;
• has knowledge and skills to manage scientific work of a team;
• is able to process, report, make public and justify the results of scientific research, technology and production work.

Professional Graduates’ Profiles and Potential Positions

The branches for Masters in Biology are biological systems of different evolution structures, their life cycles, evolution, biological, bio-engineering, bio-medical environment protection techniques, biological testing and monitoring as well as evaluation and use of bio-resources. Master in Biology is guided by ethical and legal regulations concerning humans and nature; they demonstrate basic ideas on biodiversity and its necessity for biosphere to function, have deep and advanced knowledge about molecular life level, use modern testing methods and equipment in performing research, have and use modern and profound knowledge on main bio-technologies and genetic engineering, molecular modeling as well as sensibility and limits for its apply in modern manufacturing methods and protection of human life and health, have clear understanding of bio-ethic and bio-safety questions; they must be able to hold discussions and teach biological subjects at college and university levels. A Master must be able to perform the following professional tasks: in the sphere of scientific research – manage and participate in scientific research field and laboratory work, analyze and summarize the obtained information using advanced equipment, software and literature data, work out new methods, process reports, have their articles published, organize scientific conferences. A Master is professionally prepared for special work in the sphere of production activity including its launch, able to keep under control the processes of biological production, run bio-monitoring and evaluate the environment state, plan and run events on nature protection, function in the sphere of organizing and administration activity.

Access to Further Education

Master in Biology can proceed with education process at the NaUKMA PhD School specializing in 03.00.15 – genetics, or take post-graduate program at any other higher institution or scientific research institution specializing in any other branch in the field of biological science.
