Applicants for the Master’s degree in the field of ‘Cultural Studies” should have the degree of bachelors or specialists in culture, bachelors or specialists in philosophy, sociology, political science, philology, history, study of art.
Special Requirements for Admission
Selection of applicants is based upon the results of the English and Ukrainian language tests and examinations in the special subject.

Master in the field of “Cultural Studies” entails profound preparation in the Humanities, understanding of major theoretical concepts of modern cultural studies, its most influential methods of analysis, the national and worldwide input into the theory and history of culture; skillful performance of analysis and interpretation of both textual and visual material.
Program Profile
Master’s degree program is designed for a 2-year study period (according to the letter 1/11-3341 of 29.05.07), aimed at achievement of specialized knowledge in cultural studies, profound study of the theory and history of the world and national culture. The specialization which is awarded by the department at Master’s degree level is “Theory and History of Culture”.
Key Learning Outcomes
Master of cultural studies is prepared both for continuation of education as a post graduate student specializing in “Theory and History of Culture” (26.00.01), and for practical work, requiring analytical and humanitarian skills.
The Professional Competence of Master in the field of “Cultural Studies” involves having profound knowledge in theoretical, historical, cultural subjects, mastering the scope of special cultural studies subjects in accordance to the chosen professional sphere; clear understanding of the position which cultural studies has in the system of the humanities, having academic knowledge of the past and present trends and specific features of the cultural processes in the East and the West.; the ability to perform academic analysis of the necessary strategic tasks from the point of view of different schools, theories, etc., which constitute the national and western cultural studies; knowledge of the context, sources, genesis and the main points of development of the science of cultural studies in the national and worldwide academic community; having a high level of rhetorical and literary culture (the culture of writing) for an adequate professional self representation; being able to speak and write English fluently; being completely fluent in spoken and written Ukrainian.
The study of theoretical subjects is conducive to shaping such practical skills of a specialist, as the ability to create an academic project and carry out academic research of a specific problem; to give an expert assessment of cultural policy; to make an analytical review of literature covering a particular topic, to make a selective synopsis with a specific aim; to teach cultural studies subjects in secondary and specialized secondary establishments, colleges specializing in the humanities, to select, process and classify museum collections, artifacts of historical and cultural value.
Professional Graduates' Profiles and Potential Positions
Educational and professional preparation of a master of cultural studies results in the ability and practical skills for implementing executive, advisory, pedagogical, scientific and communicative professional functions.
A master of cultural studies is prepared for the types of professional activity, which correspond to the State Classifier of the Types of Economic Activity DK 009:2005 (KVED): teaching cultural studies subjects of practical area of application (museum management, ethnology, practical training management, etc.); teaching world culture history courses in secondary educational establishments; carrying out research projects in the sphere of cultural studies; preparation and editing of texts in books, brochures, booklets, magazines and other periodicals.

Access to Further Education
A master of cultural studies is qualified to apply for the post-graduate degree course 26.00.01 – “Theory and History of Culture” and related specialties.
Requirements for Examinations, Assessment and Grades
Students’ knowledge assessment is performed according to 100-point rating system in accordance with the “NaUKMA Instruction about the Rating System of Knowledge Assessment”.
The criteria of knowledge assessment and the conditions of defining a student’s rating at a specific subject are decided and endorsed by the department and the students are informed about them at their first lesson.
Graduation Requirements
The state accreditation for attaining the qualification level of master of cultural studies in NaUKMA is carried out in the form of a master’s qualification thesis. The necessary condition for access to qualification thesis viva voce is full completion of master degree course syllabus. The qualification thesis is accepted for viva voce with the reviews of the research tutor and a reviewer.
