<i><font color=#003590>Ukrainian As a Foreign Language </font></i> is a <b>free</b> online course for beginners. It offers eleven lessons containing basic vocabulary and grammar. You do not need to know any Ukrainian to take this course successfully. It is fairly short to spare the need for planning a language course far ahead of your trip to Ukraine but nonetheless it provides a comprehensive overview of Ukrainian language basics. We have in particular elaborated on essential language elements that are alien to the English language structure and therefore harder for beginners to understand. Whenever appropriate, similarities in other languages (German, French, Russian, etc.) are pointed out.<p>
Developing the course, we have used three advantages the Web can offer to language students:

<li><b>Easy accessibility and time efficiency</b>. No time is wasted on looking for textbooks, tapes or classroom courses; no tight schedules or travel constraints.
<li><b>Authenticity</b>. The course is devised by a native Ukrainian experienced in language learning and teaching. Dialogues and texts recorded in sound files are also spoken by native Ukrainians.
<li><b>"One-stop shopping."</b> The lessons are structured as a logical series with exercises, keys to them, and sound files, but they can also serve as a short grammar reference. The site contains a Ukrainian-English glossary, which covers the course vocabulary, and a glossary of grammar terms. You will also find comments on transliteration and a number of culture-specific aspects of usage.

We won't promise that you'll speak Ukrainian upon completing this course, but you should be able to handle a number of everyday situations.
