The Department of Biology is a structural part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The first generation of students enrolled to the Bachelor Program in Biology in 1992. The Bachelor Program provides studies in all biological disciplines with a special focus on biochemistry, genetics and microbiology. The Program also includes an educational scientific practice which takes place at Kremenets’ Botanical Garden and a student research practice at the institutions of National Academy of Science of Ukraine. The students start working with scientific issues, conducting researches in the laboratories of Kyiv-Mohyla Department of Biology and in many other scientific institutions.
The Master Program in Biology exists at the Department since 1997. Its purpose is to deepen both theoretical and practical knowledge gained at the Bachelor Program and to prepare the students for their professional work in the field of biology. This Program includes both research and teaching practice. The Masters of Biology are fully prepared to continue their studies and scientific research in the leading scientific institutions of Ukraine and scientific centers all over the World.
The Department of Biology offers postgraduate studies in two specializations – Biochemistry and Genetics. The postgraduates who enter these Programs have the opportunity to enroll in the Kyiv-Mohyla Doctoral School at the PhD Program in Biology and to defend the PhD dissertation there.
The Department has two laboratories: Scientific and Methodical Laboratory of Microbiology headed by Associate Professor Iryna Furtat, and Research Laboratory of Genetics and Cell Biology headed by Associate Professor Maksym Antonyuk. The level of qualification of the Department’s staff guarantees the best and most modern scientific and methodological level of its scientific projects, as does the modern tool base provided here. The research work is carried out with the support from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and multiple international grants.
The Department of Biology has being engaged in an advantageous cooperation with a lot of scientific centers for many years. The most prominent of our partners include the following:
- Agriculture and Agri-food Canada (AAFC, Ottawa, Canada)
- Leibniz Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (Gatersleben, Germany)
