Laboratory of Genetics and Cell Biology of the Biology Department at the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” was established in 2007.
The purpose of its creation was to raise the level of the biologists’ competence through combining studying and research work within the general academic conception of the NaUKMA.
The Laboratory has been designed and equipped at the European level. It consists of a light, biochemical, prokaryotic, workshop, and culture rooms, as well as ancillary facilities. In addition to its scientific function, the Laboratory also serves as a learning and training platform. On its basis, the students take classes in the course of "Biometrics" and selected classes in Molecular Genetics and Microscopy.
Research
The main research directions of the Laboratory:
1. Conducting research work, involving professors, graduate students, undergraduate students of Bachelor and Master Programs, and trainee students, in the following areas:
- Introgression of the extraneous genes into the gene pool of the cultivated plants;
- Genomic engineering and subchromosomal engineering;
- Genetic analysis using genomic and chromosome engineering methods;
- Population genetics;
- Genetics of plant resistance;
- Genetics of quantitative traits;
- Development of the methodological bases for using genetic markers for genetic analysis of the plants of the introgressive origin.
2. Research and academic activities with the MP Biology students within practical courses of "Cell Biology", "Molecular Genetics of Plants", "Molecular Cell Biology of Plants."
3. Organization and hosting of the International School for Cell Biology.
4. Implementation of the research results obtained in the Laboratory into the study process of the NaUKMA.
Research
During 2012-2014, the Laboratory performed a research, funded from the state budget of Ukraine, on the topic "Increasing of Ecological Plasticity of the Soft Wheat through Induction of Recombinogenesis Involving Introgressive Chromatin."
The objective of the research was to establish the specifics of the extraneous chromatin components (introgressions) transfer from various wild wheat-related species of differing sizes to the soft wheat genome, the process that occurs with the background presence of the chromosomes of 4Ssh Aegilops sharonensis species, known for its gametocidal effect, into the genome of the initial hybrid plants.
Expected results: Establishing a potential value of the introgressive lines as a source of useful extraneous genes and dependence of these lines’ traits on their genomic structure.
In addition, during 2010-2014, the Laboratory performed research on the following topics:
"Introgressive Processes in the Soft Wheat Genome and Their Application for the Triticinae Genetic Analysis».
The objective of the research was to examine the number of introgressive lines of the soft wheat in relation to the multiple allelism by the beta-amylase genes.
Expected results: To outline the inheritance pattern of the beta-amylase alleles in the introgressive lines of the soft wheat with and without gametocidal chromosome 4Ssh.
"Induction of Recombinogenesis for the Extraneous Genes Transfer into the Genome of the Soft Wheat."
Objective: To assess the genetic variability within the introgressive lines of the soft wheat and its significance in establishing their authenticity.
Expected results: it is expected to find out whether one can use molecular genetic markers specific to certain introgressive lines in order to work with genetically unstable lines.
