Extensive participation by Kyiv-Mohyla Academy scholars in high profile academic and professional events in the same week in New York City

 

New York City, May 26, 2024 - The third week of May saw a number of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (KMA) scholars from various humanities disciplines and from the school of journalism participate in high profile events in New York City.

 

Association for the Study of Nationalities

 

Scholars of the National University participated extensively in the 28th Annual World Convention of the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), held at Columbia University (Harriman Institute) in New York on May 16-18, 2024. In conversation with international colleagues, they discussed significant topics of their research, bringing their perspectives into global discussions.

 

Olha Poliukhovych, Vice President for Research and Academic Affairs at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Associate Professor at the Volodymyr Morenets Department of Literature, and Mariia Shuvalova, PhD Candidate in Literary Studies and Acquisition Editor of Ukrainian translations at Academic Studies Press (Boston), joined a roundtable discussion “War and Academia: Assessing and Planning Changes During the Global Paradigm Shift”.

 

Tamara Martsenyuk, an award-winning gender expert and Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology, joined the discussions at the sessions “A Decade After the Euromaidan: Changes in Ukrainian Politics and Society post-2014” and “Stay Not Return: Patterns and Determinants of (Non)-Integration of Ukrainian Refugees”.

 

The session “Humanity in War: The Ukrainian Example” included presentations by Dariya Orlova, Media Researcher and Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism; Kateryna Skorohod, PhD Candidate at the Department of Sociology; Anton Suslov, Analyst at the School for Policy Analysis, Senior Lecturer in the Department of International Relations; Maksym Yakovlev, Head of the Department of International Relations, Director of the School for Policy Analysis; and Anna Osypchuk, the Director for Research at the School for Policy Analysis at NaUKMA and Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology.

 

Association of Ukrainian Journalists of North America

 

On May 16th and 17th, the Association of Ukrainian Journalists of North America, in partnership with the Ukrainian Institute of America, held its annual conference in New York City. The main topics of the conference included the war in Ukraine as covered by international media, the practice of journalism during the war, and the challenges posed by disinformation and fake news in the digital age.

 

The conference featured prominent speakers such as Sevgil Musaieva, Editor-in-Chief of the leading online publication Ukrainska Pravda; BBC News anchor and journalist Helena Humphrey; correspondent Simon Shuster; Deputy Director at Kyiv Mohyla School of Journalism and Deputy Chief Editor of Stopfake.org Viktoriia Romaniuk; journalist and author Peter Pomerantsev, Senior Fellow at the Agora Institute, Johns Hopkins University; Diane Francis, author and editor-at-large at the National Post; Vadym Karpiak, editor of the London Ukrainian Review and presenter at ICTV Kyiv; and Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations.

 

Capping off a busy week over refreshments and conversation

 

On Saturday evening, Taisa Markus, Visiting Professor of Law at Kyiv Mohyla Academy, hosted a meet and greet for visitors from KMA and Ukrainian Americans affiliated with various diaspora organizations including the Ukrainian Institute of America, Razom and the KMA Foundation.  Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to get to know each other, learn about the work of KMA and of diaspora organizations and consider future collaborations.
