Researchers from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy participated in the annual ASEEES (Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies) convention — one of the largest international events dedicated to the study of the Eastern European region. This year's theme, Liberation, resonated deeply with ongoing challenges in Ukraine.
The convention brought together scholars from diverse fields — from literature and cultural studies to anthropology and law — to discuss issues related to the development of Slavic and Eurasian studies. Among the key topics addressed were Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression in various dimensions, the confrontation between democracies and autocracies, the defense of human rights, as well as the politics of memory and the protection of war victims.
NaUKMA researchers presented the results of their studies in the fields of literary studies, history, international relations, and law, with all topics focused on Ukraine and the challenges of a full-scale war.
Among the presenters were:
- Hanna Taranenko, Senior Lecturer at the Department of International Relations, who delivered the presentation "Ensuring and Sustaining Liberation through Information and Cognitive Security: The Role of Ukrainian Civil Society."
- Myroslava Antonovych, Associate Professor at the Department of International and European Law, who presented the paper "Case Law of the European Court of Human Rights on Soviet Genocide in Lithuania."
NaUKMA scholars also moderated several panels:
- Dmytro Koval, Associate Professor at the Department of International and European Law, chaired the panel "The Evolution of Russian/Soviet Genocides of the Kyrgyz, Kazakhs, Ukrainians, Chechens, and Lithuanians in a Comparative Perspective."
- Maria Shuvalova, a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Literary Studies named after V. Morenets, moderated the panel "Regimes of Violence in Russian-occupied Crimea."
Additionally, Olha Poliukhovych, Vice President for Academic and Educational Studies at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Associate Professor at the Department of Literary Studies named after V. Morenets, participated in roundtable discussions on "Liberating Embodied Knowledge: The Case of Ukrainian Literature" and "Practices of Liberation in Women’s Writing circa 1900 (Central and Eastern Europe)."
Oksana Khomiak, Senior Lecturer at the Department of History, joined the roundtable "One Story at a Time: Communicating the Impacts of the Russo-Ukrainian War through Personal Testimony across Different Media and Audiences."

This conference was not only a platform for presenting research but also an opportunity for Ukrainian scholars to convey to an international audience the importance of amplifying Ukrainian voices globally.
As Olha Poliukhovych emphasized:
"The significance of the Ukrainian agenda has grown immensely, particularly in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, as it serves as a vital tool for academic and cultural diplomacy. Our researchers presented groundbreaking findings, engaged in thought-provoking discussions, and forged valuable connections with international colleagues, further solidifying our university's position as a leading center of academic excellence and research."
The participation of NaUKMA researchers in the ASEEES conference was made possible through the generous support of the Ukrainian American Coordinating Council (UACC).
